This section contains maps of the locations and burn areas of the fires that occurred during the largest outbreaks of the season. Finally, we remember those lives lost as a result of the North Bay Fires and Northern California Fires in October 2017. In addition, we highlight how National Weather Service Forecast Offices responded to the fires in order to provide weather support to those decision makers on the front line, as well as key state and federal partners. Parts of northern California have been ravaged by intense and fast-burning wildfires that broke out on October 8, 2017. We also examine the weather conditions that enabled the explosive growth of the fires throughout the North Bay. Twenty-one became major fires that burned at least 245,000 acres. ![]() We analyze the 4 major fires that impacted Napa and Sonoma Counties: the Tubbs, Atlas, Nuns, and Pocket Fires. The October 2017 Northern California wildfires, also known as the Northern California firestorm, North Bay Fires, and the Wine Country Fires were a series of 250 wildfires that started burning across the state of California, United States, beginning in early October. NWS Bay Area created an ArcGIS Story Map that takes a look back to the North Bay Fires. Intense, fast-moving fires have been raging across much of California since Sunday night. The fire activity data displayed are from government data sources. It DOES NOT replace authoritative information, but may help fill a critical gap early on in a fire incident. The four major fires in Sonoma and Napa Counties were the Tubbs Fire, the Nuns Fire, the Atlas Fire, and the Pocket Fire. This map is powered by NAPSG, GISCorps, and CEDR Digital volunteers to increase situational awareness for the public, first responders, and emergency management agencies. A series of destructive and deadly wildfires ignited overnight October 8-9, 2017, impacting thousands upon thousands of residents throughout the North Bay in California. ![]()
